A scientist is someone who conducts scientific research to advance knowledge in an area of interest. If we turn the pages of history than there are many great scientists who had changed the world by their great inventions. Today, I am going to present the 5 greatest scientists of all time.
5) PYTHAGORAS:
Pythagoras was born in 570 BC and is known best for the proof of the important Pythagorean theorem, which is about right triangles. He started a group of mathematicians, called the Pythagoreans, who worshiped numbers and lived like monks. He was an influence for Plato.

2) MARIE CURIE:
Marie Curie was born in 1867 in Poland. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, in Physics, and with her later win, in Chemistry, she became the first person to claim Nobel honors twice. Her efforts with her husband Pierre led to the discovery of polonium and radium, and she championed the development of X-rays.

5) PYTHAGORAS:
Top 5 facts:
- Pythagoras was the first person to use the term philosophy.
- Pythagoras discovered that musical notes could be translated into mathematical equations.
- He founded his religion in Croton around 530 BC, but he and his followers were widely persecuted for their religious views and political involvement.
- He told people he would be reborn after death.
- He is most widely known for the Pythagorean theorem, which states that "a right-angled triangle the area of the square on the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the areas of the squares of the other two sides," in other words, A2 + B2=C2.
- Pythagoras had rules for everything.
- He was treated like a god.
- Pythagoras was said to have had extraordinary success in dealing with animals. A fragment from Aristotle records that, when a deadly snake bit Pythagoras, he bit it back and killed it.
- Popular belief holds that Pythagoras also made important contributions in medicine, music, astronomy, and divination.
- may have been killed during his persecution, or he may have escaped to Metapontum, where he eventually died.
- Silence is better than unmeaning words.
- The oldest, shortest words— "yes" and "no"— are those which require the most thought.
- Choose rather to be strong of soul than strong of body.
Scientist Galileo Galilee was born in 1564 and became famous for his work on mathematics and astronomy. He developed the telescope to enable close observation of the night sky and was famously imprisoned for his (correct) theory that the sun was at the centre of the universe.
Top 5 facts:
- Galileo was the first person to officially study the night sky with a telescope.
- Galileo was sent to prison for his scientific belief that the sun was at the centre of the solar system.
- Galileo was the first person to spot the four moons of Jupiter – they are known as the Galilean moons.
- Galileo’s first job was as an art teacher.
- Galileo discovered that our moon has mountains and craters.
- While studying medicine Galileo decided to become a monk, but soon left the monastery he had joined in order to study mathematics. He became interested in mathematics after accidentally attending a lecture on geometry.
- Galileo thought that the tides on the Earth were caused by the rotation of the Earth rather than anything to do with the moon (as had been suggested by Kepler). This particular theory of Galileo’s was in fact wrong.
- Although Galileo never married he did have three children with a woman called Marina Gambia – two daughters and a son. His two daughters became nuns and Galileo used to fix things at the convent where they lived.
- Galileo’s approach to science was unusual at the time – scientists didn’t generally carry out experiments to test out their theories. Effectively Galileo developed what we now know as ‘the scientific method’ of experimentation.
- As a young man, Galileo was fascinated by the pendulum movement of a chandelier he was watching. This ultimately led him to his work on a pendulum clock.
- Measure what is measurable, and make measurable what is not so.
- We cannot teach people anything; we can only help them discover it within themselves.
- All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them.
3) ISSAC NEWTON:
Newton was born in 1643 and became famous for his work on gravity and his three laws of motion. He was also well known for his work on light and colour, and what is now called calculus (a branch of mathematics).
Top 5 facts:
- Isaac Newton is best known for 'discovering' gravity, but he worked on so many different topics that our understanding of the world was changed forever by his work..
- Newton discovered that white light is made up of a range of colours.
- Newton initially studied for a law degree at Cambridge University. During this time he bought a book on maths but didn’t understand it.
- Newton had many roles in his life beyond his scientific research: he was Warden and Master of the Mint, and President of The Royal Society, as well as a member of parliament (MP).
- When he was an MP, Newton only ever spoke one sentence – and that was to ask for a window to be closed!
- Isaac Newton was not very keen on school work and preferred reading and making things.
- Newton was the first person to build a reflecting telescope, which made the images seen through a telescope much clearer.
- Newton was the first scientist to be buried at Westminster Abbey. Since then other scientists have been buried there, including Charles Darwin, Ernest Rutherford, and Sir JJ Thompson.
- Newton studied maths, physics and astronomy at Cambridge University. He became Professor of Mathematics and worked at the university for over 30 years.
- Forces are measured in ‘Newtons’ after Newton’s work on motion.
- Genius is patience.
- What goes up must come down.
- To every action there is always opposed an equal reaction.
Top 5 facts:
- Marie added two brand new elements to the periodic table i.e. polonium and radium.
- Initially, the nobel prize committee didn't want the award to be given to Marie as she was a woman.
- Now, she is the only person to win a Nobel Prize in two different sciences.
- She personally provided Medical Aid to French soldiers during the first World War.
- She was the to know 5 different languages i.e. Polish, Russian, English, German and French.
- Her both parents were involved in teaching profession.
- She had no idea of the dangers of radioactivity.
- Her eldest daughter, Irene also won the Nobel Prize.
- Marie Curie’s lab papers from the 1890’s are still radioactive.
- Marie Curie, who discovered polonium and radium, used to carry it around in her pocket, and even admired the glow of it at night, which ultimately led to her death.
- Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.
- Be less curious about people and more curious about ideas.
- Have no fear of perfection; you’ll never reach it.
1) ALBERT EINSTEIN:
Albert Einstein was born in 1879 in Germany. He grew to be one of the most famous qand clever scientists ever to have lived. During his lifetime, Albert Einstein came up with some amazing theories about light, matter, gravity, space and time and soon enjoyed world-wide fame!
Top 5 facts:
- Although he apparently didn’t like school, Einstein showed he had a great mind for maths and science from a young age.
- When he was just five years old, his father bought him a compass. His enquiring mind immediately started trying to work out just why the needle always pointed north!
- Einstein began to make his mark after he took a job at the Patent Office in Bern, where he looked into other people’s inventions. While he was there he worked on his own discoveries and found out many things that became of great importance in the world of physics.
- Einstein is probably most famous for his ‘theory of relativity’ and the equation he made famous, e=mc², which proved that even the smallest amount of mass can be turned into a huge amount of energy.
- Einstein lived in Germany during World War 1 but he was a pacifist – this meant he didn’t believe in war and violence and wanted disagreements to be settled peacefully. In 1933 he moved to the USA.
- It’s hard to believe but Einstein was very slow with his speech and didn’t really talk until he was four years old. In fact, his grandmother thought he was stupid!
- Einstein married twice and had three children. His first wife was Mileva Maric, one of his classmates, but they later divorced and Einstein then married his cousin Elsa Löwenthal.
